Holmwood TRAIL CHALLENGE

SUNDAY 2nd March 2003

11 am  Holmwood Common, near Dorking Surrey

A 10km and 6km challenge for running clubs organised

by your local orienteering club

SOUTH LONDON ORIENTEERS and WAYFARERS (SLOW) invite you to a morning of racing on Holmwood Common. There will be 2 trail races, a 10km and a 6km. Several checkpoints will define the courses which will be run entirely over good tracks and trails across the common - the challenge arises from choosing the fastest route between them.

EVENT CENTRE & PARKING:  Parking will be on the street in Beare Green, 5 miles south of Dorking, Surrey   You must turn LEFT off A24 into Beare Green village.  There is no right turn off the A24 at this junction if coming from Dorking, you must go around the Beare Green roundabout and come back north.  DO NOT ENTER road through village from the North and you must NOT park in South Holmwood.  Watch out for an official in a yellow bib indicating where to park.  If you haven’t pre-entered you will be given an entry form / information as you park.  Please try to share transport.

You will then need to walk/run to the event centre in South Holmwood (between 400m and 1300m from parking) to pay.  The start is 800m from the event centre, on the common itself.  There will be an area to leave spare clothing at the start (but bring a plastic bag).  There will be toilets available at the event centre but we regret that there are no changing facilities, please come ready to run.

START TIMES  11am for 10km and 11.15pm for 6km.  Aim to arrive at Beare Green no later than 10.00am.  The event centre will be open from 9am.  Maps of the area will be on display near registration to allow you to familiarise yourself with the area.  Maps with pre-marked checkpoints that define the courses will be distributed during a pre-race briefing a few minutes before each start.  (NB No compass necessary).

ENTRY FEES  £5 each, but only £2 for juniors and full-time students (bring NUS cards).  For this you get  a detailed map of Holmwood Common, use of an electronic ' finger' (as used in orienteering and adventure racing) to record your visit to each checkpoint and instant results showing your split-time at each checkpoint.  Pay at the event centre.

PRIZES  These will be in the usual categories including women, juniors, and veterans.  In the 6km race only women, juniors and super-veterans will be eligible for prizes.  The more entries in advance we get the more bottles of wine/beer will be given away.

PRIZE-GIVING  This will take place between 12.30 pm and 1pm in the event centre.

PRE-ENTRIES  Please try to enter in advance through the SLOW web site, although you can still enter on the day at the event centre.  Everyone must visit the event centre to pay for their race entry.  If you enter in advance you are guaranteed a place in the race, there may be a limit on entries on the day due to number of maps available.
