The next SLOW street orienteering event is on Wednesday 15th February, around the streets, alleyways and university of the delightful Surrey town that is Guildford. Make the most of the opportunity to do a street event away from the smog of central London!
The event is within 10 minutes walk of Guildford station. There are regular fast trains to Guildford from London Waterloo (taking just over 30 minutes), as well as regular trains from Clapham Junction, Wimbledon, Surbiton and many other stations in south-west London. Alternatively, Guildford is an easy drive down the A3, and there is plenty of parking in the large public car park next to the venue (free after 6.30pm).
The event will be based at THE WEYSIDE pub on Millbrook. We have reserved an
area of the pub for the evening, and the landlord is quite happy for sweaty
runners to be coming in and out! (Impressively, he even already knows what
orienteering is.) There is an excellent food menu, and meals are served until
10pm.
Location map here.
(The public car park is on the same side of the road as the pub, about 200m
north - but note that you can only get into the car park if you are driving
northbound, there is no right turn allowed into it if driving south from town
centre! Instead you have to turn left into the High St just after leaving the
roundabout on the A281, take the first right (Quarry St), turn right into
Millbrook northbound at the traffic lights, and the car park is 100m on the
left.)
Start times will be between 7.00-8.00pm (although given the event is further away than usual, if you need to start a bit later this should be fine - but please let me know in advance). As usual, the format will be a 60-minute score event.
This is a Street-O map like you have never seen before! It is in full colour (even the roads are in brown), and a bit more detailed than usual. The area covers the whole of central Guildford, and includes a number of controls on the university campus - I believe this is the first Street-O event to use an area previously used for World Cup orienteering races!
Please send me an email if you think you might be coming (mailto:webmaster@sloweb.org.uk) so I can roughly plan for printing of enough maps.
See you all on the 15th!
